Digital membership systems, private community and course platforms
Subscription membership sites, online course platforms and small community platforms.

This service covers building and configuring members-only digital platforms: subscription membership sites, online course platforms and small community platforms. The goal is an automated system where users get access to their content on their own after signing up or paying, manage their subscriptions and interact with the community.
Depending on your business model and needs, it can be built in a proven CMS-based environment (for example Systeme, or WordPress with a dedicated membership and course engine), with modern headless solutions, or as a custom web application.
Which features and areas does the service cover?
- Access control and protected content
- User registration, login and profile management.
- Different membership levels (for example free member, VIP member, annual subscriber).
- Strict protection of content (videos, articles, downloadable documents) against unauthorized access.
- Payment gateway and automatic access management
- Integrating Stripe or another card payment system for one-off purchases and recurring monthly or yearly subscriptions.
- Instant, automatic activation of access after a successful payment.
- Automatic restriction or removal of access after a failed charge or a cancellation.
- A self-service customer account where members manage their card details and subscription status.
- Course and learning structure (LMS)
- A logical structure of lessons, modules and materials with a progress bar.

- Protected display of embedded videos and handling of downloadable attachments.
- Community features and interaction
- Comments and questions under lessons or in dedicated topics.
- A simple internal forum or community feed for members to talk to each other.
- System connections and automatic communication
- Automatic invoicing (Xero or QuickBooks) after every successful charge.
- Automatic welcome and onboarding emails with login details.
- Syncing members to email marketing tools (e.g. MailerLite, ActiveCampaign) with the right tags.
How does the project work?
- Defining the structure and model: We clarify the membership model (a one-off course, a monthly club, a community platform), the access levels and the features you need.
- Setting up the technical foundation: We choose the most cost-effective and stable framework and build the basic page structure and design.
- Configuring the features: I set up the access levels, the payment system, the invoicing and the course and community modules.
- Thorough testing: By simulating real flows I check registration, payment, login, content protection and automatic invoicing on both desktop and mobile.
- Handover and training: I hand over the finished platform and show you how to use the back end, so you can upload new lessons, posts or content yourself in the future.
What does the handover include?
- A fully configured, tested membership or community platform.
- A working payment gateway and automatic invoicing connection.
- Sample modules and lessons uploaded to verify the structure.
- A short technical guide and training so your team can manage new content independently.
- Support in the days after launch, monitoring live operation.
- On request, an agreement on later technical supervision and maintenance.
How we work and terms
- Fixed-price billing: Depending on the scope and the features you choose, we work with a fixed project price agreed in advance.
- A responsible developer's approach: As a freelancer, my aim is to build stable, reliable platforms at realistic prices. If more complex access rules or integrations need a few extra days of testing, that costs the client nothing extra.
- Prerequisites: Hosting, a domain, an external payment account (e.g. Stripe) and third-party plugin or licence costs are the client's responsibility. I help you choose each of them.
Frequently asked questions
What additional costs should I expect on top of your development fee?
Your own hosting and domain, and the fee the online payment provider (e.g. Stripe) takes on successful transactions. If you publish large video courses, it is worth connecting a separate secure video host — the hosting plan is paid directly to the provider; we connect it to the platform (e.g. Bunny.net or Vimeo) so the videos do not slow the website down and cannot be downloaded directly. I always help you pick the cheapest reliable option.
How can course materials and videos be protected from being downloaded or shared?
Access is tied to the user's login status and access level. For videos we use domain-restricted embedding: they can only be watched from your members-only site, and opening the direct video link or embedding it on another website is blocked.
What happens if a member's monthly charge fails, or they cancel their subscription?
The payment gateway (e.g. Stripe) automatically retries the card several times and emails the customer to update their details. If the payment finally fails, or the member cancels, the system automatically removes access to the protected content, with no human intervention.
Will I or my team be able to upload new courses and lessons without developer skills?
Yes. I build the administration back end so you can upload new lessons, texts, PDFs or videos through a clear editor by filling in simple forms. At handover I show you how to use it, so you will not need a programmer for everyday content management.
Can the membership system be connected to my existing website or invoicing tool?
Yes. The membership or course area can live on a subpage of your existing website or on a separate subdomain (e.g. learn.yourcompany.com). Automatic invoicing after successful payments (Xero or QuickBooks) and adding new members to your email marketing tool (e.g. MailerLite, ActiveCampaign) are built straight into the flow.
